Harvesting locally

Writer: Linda HinesLinda Hines

Choose Local Fresh Fruit and Vegetables for maximum flavour and nutrition!

Once I started eating more fruits and vegetables, I started to enjoy going to my local farmer's market to buy produce and l looked for local produce that was in season at the grocery store I regularly shop in. The taste of fresh, locally harvested produce is delicious and the sooner it is harvested from field to table, the fresher and more nutritious it is.

I was fortunate to grow up in a community with lots of farms full of fresh fruits and vegetables. My grandfather lived close to my family and he grew fresh produce on a half acre garden. I still remember the joy of running around in his garden picking fresh strawberries, raspberries and green peas straight from the garden. A typical sunday afternoon outing for my family was going for a hike followed by a trip to the local apple farm to get fresh apple cider and apples. This is still a great way to spend a sunday afternoon and if you can't get out to the country, there is usually a farmer's market in most cities where you can bring the country to you!
